“With this new anthology, Barb has curated a literal “who’s who” roster of the best weird fiction writers working today, with tales inspired by the songs of Neutral Milk Hotel.”
A new anthology featuring tales inspired by the strange and beautiful music of Neutral Milk Hotel.
Twenty-two stories of weird, phantasmagoric fiction.
Alternate histories, mythological re-imaginings, future visions.
Why we’re excited about this book:
Writer, editor, and publisher Patrick Barb has assembled a new anthology primed to be one of the weird fiction anthologies of 2025. The author of Helicopter Parenting in the Age of Drone Warfare, Pre-Approved for Haunting, and The Children’s Horror, Barb’s short-fiction is featured in such publications as Shortwave Magazine, and The Best Horror of the Year: Volume 16 among others. With this new anthology, Barb has curated a literal “who’s who” roster of the best weird fiction writers working today, with tales inspired by the songs of Neutral Milk Hotel. Featuring stories by Lillah Lawson, Camila Hamel, Briar Ripley Page, Tiffany Morris, Mathew Kressel, Brian Evenson, Dale Light, Corey Farrenkopf, Ai Jiang, Richard Thomas, John Langan, and many more. Chris Bilheimer, the artist behind the iconic cover of NMH’s legendary 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, provides the cover art for this anthology. Molly Tanzer (Creatures of Will and Temper) says: “As multifarious and seductive as the lyrics of Jeff Mangum, these stories all stand beautifully on their own while together producing a cryptic spectacle worthy of their inspiration.”, and Brian McAuley (Curse of the Reaper) says: “Every author milks their surreal sonic source material with tales ranging from horrifically weird to heartbreakingly poignant in a collection that’s anything but neutral.”
Releasing from PB Books 14 January 2025, And One Day We Will Die: Strange Stories Inspired by the Music of Neutral Milk Hotel, edited by Patrick Barb, is available for pre-order now.
