“With her latest effort, Moreno-Garcia weaves the Gothic novel with Mexican folklore to deliver a tale of nightmarish, pulse-pounding horror.”
Debutante Noemí Taboada lives a life of beautiful gowns and glamorous cocktail parties. When she receives a strange letter from her recently wed cousin begging to be saved from a mysterious doom, Noemí wastes no time and travels to High Place in the Mexican countryside.
Noemí doesn’t know much about the region, and her cousin’s husband is a complete stranger to her. But Noemí is smart and fearless, and she’s not afraid of her cousin’s husband, or his ancient father, who seems more interested in Noemí than meets the eye. And she’s not afraid of the house, which immediately begins to invade her dreams as soon as she arrives.
She finds an unlikely ally in the family’s youngest son. He seems helpful, but could be hiding terrible secrets about the family’s past. High Place is full of dark secrets of violence and madness, and longs for another soul to claim as its own.
Why we’re excited about this book:
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is one the most exciting voices in the horror fiction scene working today. She is the author of Signal to Noise, Certain Dark Things, Prime Meridian, Gods of Jade and Shadow, and Untamed Shore. She also is an editor, most notably with the anthology She Walks in Shadows, as well as co-editing the horror fiction magazine The Dark, and her short-fiction has graced the pages of many publications online and in print. With her latest effort, Moreno-Garcia weaves the Gothic novel with Mexican folklore to deliver a tale of nightmarish, pulse-pounding horror. Victor LaValle (The Changeling) says Mexican Gothic is: “Masterful . . . a gloriously moody adventure, spooky, smart, and wry.” And Sarah Gailey (Magic for Liars) says: “A gorgeous piece of work . . . Absolutely terrifying, and it has stayed with me in a powerful way.”
Forthcoming from Del Rey 30 June 2020, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is available for pre-order now.
