“With his latest novel, Bastianelli taps into the real phenomenon of “shadow flicker”, spinning a frightening story of madness and paranoia.”
Heading off for the coast of Maine to Kidney Island, Oscar Basaran is to document the effects of shadow flicker from the residents living near the wind turbines. What he finds is quite disturbing.
Those that live closest to the windmills suffer from ringing headaches, sleep deprivation, and strange hallucinations. Even stranger: an elderly man stuffs dandelions in his mouth nearly choking to death, a pregnant cow repeatedly runs into a fence post, and a young woman mourns her missing son while others claim to see him in the glimmer of the shadow flicker.
It also seems the shadow flicker has driven some of the island’s animals to madness. Perhaps it has a similar effect among the human residents of Kidney Island? Oscar soon learns the turbines have created something weird and unexpected, and a group of the island’s residents will do anything to harness the dark power.
