“Considering Marshall completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford studying literature written during the Black Death, combined with a strange outbreak with undead consequences, The Migration is a must read for 2019.”
Catastrophic flooding across the world, and a strange disease is attacking the immune systems of the young. Kira Perella is diagnosed just as her sister Sophie is about to begin her senior year in high school. Her parents feel the strain of the illness, breaking the relationship. Sophie’s mother take the sisters to England to stay with Aunt Irene.
Aunt Irene is an Oxford University professor. She’s also a historical epidemiologist, well-versed in the history and relics of the Black Death. Her work specializes in treating people with the current epidemic. She befriends Sophie, and offers her a history of human plague.
As the death toll rises, so do rumors of strange tremors seen in the deceased.
There’s nothing normal with this illness.
The dead aren’t staying dead.
Why we’re excited about this book:
Helen Marshall’s work should be well known to fans of horror and weird fiction. Author of Gifts for the One Who Comes After, The Hanging Game, and Hair Side, Flesh Side, Helen’s work has been featured in Fearful Symmetries, Imaginarium 4: The Best Canadian Speculative Writing, as well as co-editing Year’s Best Weird Fiction, Vol. 4 with Michael Kelly. Paul Tremblay (A Head Full of Ghosts, The Cabin at the End of the World) says: “Intelligent, dark, wildly inventive, The Migration does more than put a new twist on the apocalyptic outbreak novel. It dares to be full of heart and full of difficult, defiant hope.” Considering Marshall completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford studying literature written during the Black Death, combined with a strange outbreak with undead consequences, The Migration is a must read for 2019. Releasing 5 March 2019 from Random House Canada, The Migration by Helen Marshall is available for pre-order now.
