Iain Rob Wright is one of the UK’s most successful horror and suspense writers, with novels including the critically acclaimed The Final Winter, the disturbing bestseller ASBO and the wicked screamfest The Housemates.
What first attracted you to horror writing?
I grew up first afraid of horror movies, but then loving them. I love stories about people trying to survive. I wanted to tell my own stories. So that’s what I did.
What is your most notable work?
The Final Winter has about 500 reviews in total and is mentioned in many places. It was my debut novel and allowed me to quit my job and write full time.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a space horror with author Matt Shaw. It’s a bit like Dawn of the Dead crossed with Alien.
How much planning and research do you undertake before writing?
Depends on the story. I will usually look things up as I go. If my character uses a gun, I look up guns etc.
Describe your writing routine.
I work 10 ‘till 4 Monday to Friday. The rest of the time I am a father and husband. I treat writing like a job, and that’s how I manage to stay productive.
Who do you admire in the horror world?
The love authors and fans have for it. There is no group as vocal or supportive of what they love. They love the macabre and they are not ashamed to celebrate it.
Do you prefer all out gore or psychological chills?
Psychological chills are far more my bag, but a bit of gore never hurt anybody.
Why should people read your work?
Because I love and respect the horror genre. I am faithful to its history while also trying to push it forward with new ideas.
Recommend a book.
Start with my first, The Final Winter. It’s an apocalyptic tale unlike most available. Nary a zombie in sight.
