News Round-up Week Ending 22 April 2016

Here’s a selection of some of the horror and genre news that caught our eye during the last week…

Hellboy’s Doug Jones To Star In Nosferatu ‘remix’

David Lee Fisher’s new take on F.W. Murnau’s classic 1922 Nosferatu has announced that Doug Jones, best known to horror fans for his work in Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth, will be taking on the film’s titular role.

Interestingly, Fisher’s new version is not being called a remake, reboot or even a reimagining, but is being talked up as a ‘remix’ due to the rather unusual approach he is taking to the production. Employing similar methods to those he used for his 2005 take on another classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Fisher will be using modern digital technology to pull the backgrounds from the original film to use them in his new version.

Originally a Kickstarter project, the end result is being described as “a mixture of live-action combined with colorized digital backgrounds recreated from the original film.”

Gene Simmons, Wesley Snipes and the WWE Team Up For a New Horror Movie

In what can only be described as an unusual gathering of talent, Wesley Snipes, Gene Simmons and WWE Studios have joined forces to produce upcoming horror thriller Temple which also stars Anne Heche (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Psycho remake), Dave Annable (666 Park Avenue)  and former WWE Champion Seth Rollins.

Written by Matt Savelloni and directed by John Stockwell, Temple follows a team of trained operatives who find themselves trapped inside an isolated military compound after its artificial intelligence is suddenly shut down and they begin to experience strange and horrific phenomena.

The debut picture from Erebus Pictures, the genre-centric label put together by KISS’ Simmons and WWE Studios, Temple is Snipes’ first foray into horror since 2012’s Gallowwalkers which coincidentally also starred a WWE wrestler, Diamond Dallas Page.

Fear The Walking Dead Renewed for Third Season

Despite only just having started its second season, AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead has just been renewed for a third season of 16 episodes that will air in 2017. Though not as obviously popular as its parent series, Fear The Walking Dead has nevertheless developed an impressive fan base that made its season two premier a couple of weeks ago the seventh most popular programme on American television.

Hopefully season two won’t succumb to the same sluggish writing that The Walking Dead suffered from, but regardless the fact that its future is secure for at least another year should allow the writers ample opportunity to plan ahead and bring the (second) best zombie show on television possible to its legion of fans.

Bride of Re-Animator Gets 3-disc Deluxe Treatment from Arrow Films

Brian Yuzna’s glorious but underrated second serving of one of H P Lovecraft’s most maniacal sons, Herbert West, is being given the Arrow Films treatment by way of a 3-disc Blu-ray/DVD release.

Set 8 years since the Miskatonic massacre of the original, unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead Dr. West (Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation, only this time he plans to create life—starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan’s dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. What could possibly go wrong?

As well as brand new 2K restorations of both the unrated and R-rated versions of the film, the set contains three audio commentaries, two brand new featurettes, an archived featurette, a deleted scene with commentary, a discussion about the excised Carnival sequence and a behind the scenes reel.

There’s also a collector’s booklet containing a new essay from festival programmer Michael Blyth, and a reproduction of Re-Animator: Dawn of the Re-Animator, the 1992 comic prequel to Stuart Gordon’s original Re-Animator, reprinted in its entirety.

This limited edition set is out now.

Crystal Lake Publishing Release Tribulations by Richard Thomas

Tribulations, the third short story collection by Richard Thomas, was released in paperback last week by Crystal Lake Publishing. Covering a wide range of dark fiction—from fantasy, science fiction and horror, to magical realism, neo-noir, and transgressive fiction—the common thread that weaves these tragic tales together is suffering and sorrow, and the ways we emerge from such heartbreak stronger, more appreciative of what we have left, a spark of hope enough to guide us though the valley of death.

Featuring fireflies and wolves, ghosts and golems, tentacled beasts and demonic spirits, these psychological thrillers will hypnotize you as they slide the blade between your ribs, up close and personal, whispering in your ear as you gasp and pull them closer. Tribulations includes 25 short stories—including two that were long-listed for Best Horror of the Year—as well as five original full-page illustrations by Luke Spooner.

Tribulations is available to buy right now in paperback from Amazon UK.
