This Is Horror

News Round-up Week Ending 23 September 2022

Here’s a small selection of the horror and genre news that caught our eye during the last week …

Hungary’s leading horror author, Attila Veres, releases his English debut featuring ten of his finest tales. The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales features stories that push the boundaries between reality and the weird. An obsessed fan finds dooms with the music of a legendary 90s rock band. A man presents a travelogue of his experiences navigating a Lovecraftian landscape. A couple finds their relationship is in danger because of a bizarre habit involving dogs. Brian Evenson (Song for the Unraveling of the World) says: “Every decade or so, a writer comes along who reconfigures the way we think about the Weird. First Thomas Ligotti, then Laird Barron, and now Attila Veres. An astonishing collection, really unlike anything out there, which suggests a new way forward.” With an introducing by Steve Rasnic Tem, The Black Maybe: Liminal Tales by Attila Veres, is available for pre-order now.

Iconic international best-selling writer Haruki Murakami (The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, IQ84)presents us with a tale many have never seen before: His own. With his forthcoming Novelist as a Vocation, Murakami shares his origins as a writer, including the moment he knew he could actually write a novel; the importance of memory—a writer’s “mental chest of drawers”; the role a carrier pigeon played in his writing career; the sparks of creativity that often inspire other creatives; his thoughts on the role of the novel in our society today. He also dives into those burning questions often fielded by writers everywhere, like where does he get ideas from, and where does he get the inspiration for the surreal worlds he creates. Always fascinating and insightful, Novelist as a Vocation by Haruki Murakami (translated by Philip Gabriel and Ted Goossen) releases 8 November 2022 and is available to be pre-order now.

For the first time in English, the legendary Junji Ito’s latest creation, Black Paradox, is primed to deliver the hard-hitting, super-weird, horror readers have come to expect. Ito’s work has won the Eisner Award three times, and is the creator of such classics as Uzumaki, Tomie, and Gyo. With his latest manga, four people, all with intentions of suicide, meet through a website called Black Paradox. Taburo is tortured by his doppleganger, Pii-tan has his own robot clone, Maruso despairs about the future, and Baracchi is tormented by the birthmark on her face. Together, they wander in search of perfect death, ultimately opening a door that leads to them a strange and bizarre destiny. Releasing just in time for Halloween on 25 October 2022, Black Paradox by Junji Ito is ready for pre-order now.
