This Is Horror

The Cutting Room – Body

An idyllic Christmas holiday turns deadly when best friends Holly, Cali and Mel break into a local mansion they believe to be unoccupied. They quickly realize that they’re not alone in the house, however, and in a moment of panic become embroiled in a grisly murder. The three girls self-destruct as they try and figure out what to do with the dead body in the living room.

Why we’re looking forward to this: There’s something about a film set at Christmas that warms the cockles of our twisted hearts, and it seems as though there hasn’t been a decent one for a long time. Think Gremlins, think Last Christmas (the original, not the lame remake), think Die hard – OK, not strictly a horror movie but there’s plenty of suspense and death so we’ll give it an honorary mention.

It’s not just the Christmas setting (and yes, it seems odd talking about this in July) that we’re looking forward too, though. Body has the makings of a taut grisly thriller set in a reasonably confined location, which when done well ramps up the feelings of claustrophobia, menace and downright terror of knowing that our trio of heroines are trapped in this big (possibly) empty house with a body.

Come to think of it, there’s a hint of Shallow Grave here too, which is no bad thing, as it’s always fun to watch people (on screen, of course) fall apart and turn on each other when faced with difficult moral dilemmas. Judging by the trailer, Body could well turn out to be a good old fashioned edge of your seat chiller and a pleasantly unpleasant early Christmas gift..

Body is out in the UK on 31st August and hopefully in time for Christmas in the US.
