Show Notes
The fifth installment of The Outer Dark Quarantine Reading series opens with a special installment of Reviews from The ‘Cinematic’ Weird in which Gwendolyn Kiste discusses Shirley (2020; directed by Josephine Decker), the much-anticipated ‘not-a-biopic’ about Shirley Jackson and the genesis of her novel Hangsaman (1951). [SPOILER ALERT if you have not watched the film yet]. Then Michael Wehunt (0:27:57) and Damien Angelica Walters (1:34:32) share their experiences social distancing in a time of social unrest, writing Weird and horror fiction in a stalled world and their quarantine reading recommendations. Michael reads a powerful and timely new short story, ‘The Teeth of America’(0:37:57). Damien Angelica Walters reads’The Floating Girls: A Documentary’ (1:46:56), which was selected for inclusion in The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2015, was a 2014 Bram Stoker Award Nominee for Superior Achievement in Short Fiction, and was reprinted in her second collection Cry Your Way Home (Apex, 2018).
