In this podcast The Outer Dark presents Quarantine Readings by Michael Wehunt and Damien Angelica Walters, plus Gwendolyn Kiste reviews Shirley (2020). The readings were recorded on Saturday June 6 and Wednesday June 10, 2020, and Reviews from The Cinematic Weird was recorded Tuesday June 9, 2020.

    Show Notes

The fifth installment of The Outer Dark Quarantine Reading series opens with a special installment of Reviews from The ‘Cinematic’ Weird in which Gwendolyn Kiste discusses Shirley (2020; directed by Josephine Decker), the much-anticipated ‘not-a-biopic’ about Shirley Jackson and the genesis of her novel Hangsaman (1951).  [SPOILER ALERT if you have not watched the film yet]. Then Michael Wehunt (0:27:57) and Damien Angelica Walters (1:34:32) share their experiences social distancing in a time of social unrest, writing Weird and horror fiction in a stalled world and their quarantine reading recommendations. Michael reads a powerful and timely new short story, ‘The Teeth of America’(0:37:57). Damien Angelica Walters reads’The Floating Girls: A Documentary’ (1:46:56), which was selected for inclusion in The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy & Horror 2015, was a 2014 Bram Stoker Award Nominee for Superior Achievement in Short Fiction, and was reprinted in her second collection Cry Your Way Home (Apex, 2018).

The Outer Dark Symposium on the Greater Weird is the only annual conference centered around contemporary Weird fiction. Find out more at TheOuterDark.org.
