The Outer Dark presents “The Weird Has Always Been Female: The Women’s Canon of Weird Fiction” a NecronomiCon 2022 panel moderated by Ann VanderMeer and featuring Christa Carmen, Leslie S. Klinger, Nicole Givens Kurtz, Zin E. Rocklyn,  and Elena Tchougounova-Paulson.  Recent scholarship shines an increasing light on the women founders and pioneers of Weird fiction who have been there since the beginning of the genre and who have been sometimes sidelined, sometimes writing under pseudonyms, and sometimes celebrated. Our panelists trace the history of these Weird women who shaped the genre, identify those overlooked or forgotten, and discuss the influence of women writers from Mary Shelley to the modern era. Be sure and scroll down to the Additional Links for all their reading recommendations! Thank you to Niels Hobbs, K.H. Vaughan, and all the fabulous NecronomiCon 2022 team for allowing us to air this podcast’s content, which was recorded in Providence, RI, on August 21, 2022.
